IMO's recommendation for carriage of Marine Advisors when transiting Malacca/Singapore Straits

In an effort to ensure safety of navigation and also environmental protection of the Malacca/Singapore Straits, IMO had many years ago made recommendations with respect to large vessels (VLCC) using the Malacca/ Singapore Straits. (See below Note: General provisions - #3)

IMO's Maritime Safety Committee recommendation on routing measures adopted in accordance with provisions of resolution A.858 (20). Annex 1 - All deep draught vessels and VLCCs navigating within the TSS are advised to use the pilotage service (Malacca Straits Advisors) of the respective countries when they become available

This is especially so when navigating in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. Traffic density in the Malacca Straits had increased tremendously over the years. MMA of Malaysia estimates that more than 2000 vessel of all types ply the Straits of Malacca and Singapore daily. With many shallow areas lining the stretch of the Straits and coupled with the volume of traffic calling/leaving Malaysia and Singapore ports, VLCCs and other large sensitive vessels have to be very careful in their navigation during their transit.
